Instructional Skipper Job Description

Job Title: Skipper/Instructor.
Department: Sailing School
Report to: Nanaimo Yacht Charter Director
Hours or Work: As and when courses are conducted. Live aboard training as well as evenings and weekend courses
Start date: Spring 2009
Salary: Dependant on qualifications and experience
Overall responsibility: This position involves conducting adult educational assessment, testing, and instruction in the art of sailing on both power and sail yachts .Completion of related documentation and reports; maintaining on-going student contact; maintaining public relations activities; maintaining student retention activities; and participation in staff and professional development activities.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide a strong systematic approach to sailing.
  • In a gentle, repetitive nature, enforce the many principles of sailing
  • Ensure that at all times safety comes first
  • Provide educational instruction in assigned subject/topic areas to include reading, writing, and practical sailing skills.
  • Conduct student assessment and testing.
  • Provide continuing sailing instruction to the next level of certification (if applicable)
  • Conduct any and all activities necessary to retain 100% of all assigned students.
  • Develop and submit 100% of learning documentation and progress forms (lesson plans, student portfolios, homework or testing results and other learning documentation) for 100% of assigned students in accordance with directed timeline requirements.
  • Immediately notify Nanaimo Yacht Charter management of any and all support services that students may need.
  • Notify Nanaimo Yacht Charter management of all student absences the same day the absence occurs.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of and adhere to company policies, procedures, and regulations; keep management well-informed of activities, results of efforts, problems identified/potential problems, etc.;
  • Recommend corrective actions when necessary.
  • Respect confidentiality in discussing clients, staff, volunteers, and corporate matters; as well as maintain confidentiality of company fiscal and personnel related information.
  • Implement all of the rules and regulations detailed in the Canadian Shipping and sailing regulations and Act
  • Return instructor/student books/materials supplied by Nanaimo Yacht Charters.
  • Attend all directed meetings, seminars, workshops, staff development trainings, etc.;
  • Report to work regularly and on time.
  • Provide the education needed to experience the ultimate pleasure and respect for sailing on the Pacific North West.
  • Train students to rapidly learn and assimilate the practical knowledge of sailing, while comfortably enjoying the learning process to become either competent or expert in sailing.
  • Consider and protect the environment at all times instilling this concept into all students
  • Complete Nanaimo Yacht charters detailed log book for each day of the course

Experience:

  • Strong sense of customer service
  • Good organizational skills Ability to sail confidently and instill confidence in students
  • Communication skills, patience, and the ability to connect on a personal level with each student.
  • Confident sailing/cruising in all types of marine environment, and condition.
  • Practice the strictest safety procedures in a calm and patient manner

Education

Certificated as an instructor and currently registered with either CYA, ISPA or RYA for either training basic, intermediate or advanced sailing skills. Certification to train VHF and Coastal Navigation is an asset Minimum one season sailing experience with a recognized school
